Songs of Eru and Melkor

Eru

I can see everything

Mountains and valleys

Oceans and rivers

My creation before me

A beautiful sight

Beginning of time

To the end

Stretched out before me

My children slumber

Soon to be awoken

To enjoy the fruits of my labor

I summon the Ainur

To complete this theme

And bring forth a world of beauty

I tried to think of what Eru’s song would sound like lyrically, and I think it would be something like this. The song is about the creation and the history of the world, so I included mostly lyrics about that. It would be sung lightly, not loud, and it would be like peaceful singing. I think of the singer Laufey for pieces like this, which is why I included her song “Forget-Me-Not” as the instrumentals. It is a gentle song with lots of piano and winds playing softly, which is why I think it is a good fit for the song of Eru. Eru’s song would be soothing and relaxing in my opinion. Disclaimer: I love music, but I do not know much about creating it.

Melkor

La la la laaaaa

This song is blocking out Eru

I’m going to destroy the world and

there’s nothing you can do

La la la laaaa

I’m better than the Valar

They say they hate me

But it’s just jealousy

La la laaaa

You can’t hear Eru

I’m too loud and powerful

They don’t stand a chance

La la la

Ha ha ha

So this is definitely a silly take on Melkor’s lyrics, but when it was said that the goal of Melkor’s song was to create discord with Eru’s, all I could think of was when a little kid wants to drown someone out. I’m sure that Tolkien had something more serious in mind, but the whole covering the ears and shouting act was genuinely all I could think about. For the instrumentals, I chose the instrumentals to Taylor Swift’s “I Did Something Bad” because a) it is one of the louder songs I know and b) Melkor does bad things. From about two minutes on is what I imagine it would be. Disclaimer: I love music, but I do not know much about creating it.

  1. I really enjoyed reading your version of this part of the book. I loved how you used the lyrics to describe Eru's wisdom and peace. I thought that Melkor's song portrayed his personality very well. It perfectly described his attempt to capture the attention of the creatures and to keep the spotlight all to himself. Also, the music that you used was absolutely perfect for the songs. SO GOOD!
